The Blonde, The Brunette,

and The Vengeful Redhead

by Robert Hewett

This production was developed at Triad Stage in Greensboro, NC.

This is wonderful one person script that that looks at the many points of view of one crime. This is done through 7 characters.   This was a light, projection and sound driven production. We, as a team, were responsible in allowing the characters to manifest. We created the world of the character from a basic white "mall like" set.

The sound design was two part.  The first helping to drive the transitions that could be as long as 3 minutes.  These were normally accompanied by video and projections.

The second being to create the world that the character would resided in at that moment.   I built these worlds through voiceovers and by creating soundscapes that the scene could reside peacefully in.

Graham

Top of Act II

The second act opens with a sound bite of Little Green Bag and Graham taking a leak. Graham is Rhonda's husband, he cheeted on her and started this whole thing. The scene takes place in a bar and as we listen to him get sloppier and slopper he tells his story.

Our projection designer, Bill McCord, and lighting designer, Norman Cotes, worked very hard together to not only allow Bill's work to be seen but also to truely transform the space from scene to scene. Bill and Norman were able to play off of eachother and create a world in bold colors.

The audio clip above is the intro and voice over

Lynette

Lynette is Rhonda's nextdoor neighbor and friend. She was with Rhonda when it all happened. Her schene takes place outside with planes overhead, lawnmowers and general neighborhood noise. At this moment she is discussing what happened in the mall.

This is the transition from Alex to Laynette to Matthew.

The Set

There is a "wig bar" on the right that is visiable through out the play. The actress is drawn to her next character here through lighting.

Tanya's dressing table on the left in a cubby that closes, a hospital waiting room is created for Alex at the chairs, a bar fold out of the floor for Graham, a porch up the ladder for Joan, and a cubby in the floor opens for Matthew. All appear as needed through out the play. When we enter the space the door is closes, the bar hiden, the single chair missing, and the cubby is closed creating a sterilized mall like set complete with the sound of escalators, fountains, shopping carts, and people walking around.

Rhonda

Top of Show

We started in the dark and as this played the actress entered and took her place in the interrogation room. As her purse hit the ground the music came to an abrupt end. The end tag was an electrical breaker being switched and that brought a small square of green and white light up on the stage and on Rhonda.

The music for this moment is a crescendo of modern electronic music.

Joan

Joan is the older woman of the play. She talks of Matthew and Rhonda's family. The scene provided an oportunity to create her dog through sound and imagination.

This is the transition from Joan to Tanya

Tanya

Tanya is the blonde haired beauty that Graham has the affair with. She works at Donavan's Jewelry at the mall.
